Bias Against Obesity Is Found Among Us!! (Future Dietetics Students) Please COMMENT :)

A recent article on Health.com revealed that bias existed among dietetics students.

I was very critical of the purpose and findings of this study. Below are my scattered thoughts, but please comment on what you think about this too!

What are the statistics on biases of the general public? Would these mirror the dietetics students too? Even BETTER, what are the statistics for biases of white females ages 18-23 (the majority of the dietetics students) of the general population? I feel like they would match with these statistics as well. Those surveyed were only two years into their DPD program. At my university, we had not even gotten to our counseling and clinical classes by this time. Overall, I guess I'm not sure what this study is trying to prove. I thought, as students, learning about empathy and being unbiased was an area of our training and that by the time we became professionals, any bias would cease to exist (otherwise we would not have passed our internships' competencies and been eligible to be an RD)

Have a great week!

  1. Hate to say it but I remember reading a FNCE preview and RDs are also more biased against the Obese than the general population is. I would have to do some digging to find the exact study but I know it exists. That being said, I have worked with lots of great RDs and interns and students.
