Getting ready for the school year to start is a crazy time for the school food service staff. My internship is based with Sarasota District Schools so this past week I have been learning all the ins and outs to preparing the kitchens and staff for the start of the school year! My fellow interns and I have attended meetings with the managers, area supervisors and food service director. We are also preparing a presentation to give next week at the back to school meeting with all the food service staff in the entire district (around 300 people). One of the top priorities for the director and area supervisors is to make sure that all the schools are fully staffed. Because of this they have been holding interviews and I have gotten to sit in on a couple of interviews. I have never been in an interview where I was not the one being interviewed and I was able to gain some insight about the employment process.
This past week was the last week of summer feeding so I spent much of the day helping prepare the meals, and traveling to different sites to distribute the meals. The summer feeding program’s purpose is to provide healthy meals to children 18 years and younger during the summer months when they are not getting fed in school. Many kids depend on the nutrition they get from the summer feeding program and it was really great to interact with the excited kids. I am also learning so much about federal nutrition programs from working with the summer feeding program. There is so much paperwork to complete, and guidelines to follow in order to make sure the program continues to get the funding it needs to continue.
Just one more week before the start of school when I can really dive in to my food service rotation!
