This week is the first week of school for the Sarasota School District. I was up and in the kitchen by seven thirty ready to help wherever I could! At times it seemed like I was more in the way than of any actual help. I ended up helping to prepare one hundred pounds of corn, 13 sheets of breadsticks, 4 pots of marinara sauce and 1.2 oz. cups of raw broccoli. As an intern I have already learned that you need to be able to jump in wherever you are needed and your day never goes quite as you originally planned. I really am enjoying this challenge and it certainly keeps me from getting bored, there is always something happening in food service!
Last week my fellow interns and I were presented with the challenge of creating a fun way to promote the Fuel Up to Play 60 nutrition and physical activity campaign at the back to school meeting. We spent a couple hours of hours creating a fun 10-minute skit, which we then performed in front of over 300 food service employees. It was a great way to be creative and introduce ourselves to everyone we will be working with in our internship this coming year! Over the next week I will be working in a middle school learning everything I can about production sheets, preparing meals, ordering and everything else that comes with running a school foodservice operation. I have so much to learn, and this is just the beginning!
