Nutrition News Roundup: Sharon Says Hello!

Welcome to the weekly nutrition news highlights!

I would like my first post to express a preliminary caution about all nutrition-related info. A lot of the data and health related experiments are still relatively new and though some research for example, on “power foods,” life-lengthening, and disease fighting foods has been revealed, eating healthy is eating healthy, no foods should be omitted or put on a pedestal. In addition, the abundant influx of health related info can be EXTREMELY confusing and sometimes contradictory due to the latest attention given to the importance of health.

My advice to all nutrition and health readers is: ONE- Make sure you check out the author of the article, does he/she have any credentials? Anyone can post anything on the internet or write a book! TWO- Take everything with a grain of salt IE: you know blue berries etc. are good for you, so incorporate them into your diet rather than making it your diet altogether ☺

On that note, I’d like to present you nutrition info that will hopefully placate rather than confuse you: The F.D.A. is looking to change the serving sizes for foods like chips, cookies, breakfast cereals and ice cream to represent how Americans really eat. For example, by stating the Nutrition Facts for half the bag of chips rather than just 9 of them. This will make the public conscious of their actual intake and might reduce the intake of unhealthy high-calorie foods. Sounds good to me! After all, who is satisfied with eating just 9 potato chips or half a cup of ice cream? Not anyone I know!
The underestimation of total calorie intake can cause an increase in calorie consumption, a prominent cause of obesity in the US. I hope the FDA goes through with its mission!!
