Featured Intern: The Writing Process

By Amanda Sauceda

This week I am in my leadership rotation where I work with my internship director on a variety of projects.  One of my assignments is to research and write an article.  I was a little wary at first because the topic is about beverages and lately there has been so much talk about sweetened drinks and the link to obesity among other things.  All that talk meant a lot of research to sift through to find what I wanted.

Writing can be really hard when the topic you’re trying to write about can go a million different directions.  Then its like every research article you read about is really interesting and you want to include it all.  Narrowing down the scope of my writing and really focusing in is something that I’ve struggled with.  One time in particular stands out and this was a long time ago when I still had to write book reports.  I loved my book wanted everyone in my class to love it too and ended up writing a ten-page report.  Now did that report would have been a million times better if I was to the point because all those details I wanted to give weren’t necessary.  I’ve grown up quite a bit since then and have come to understand my writing process and how to write succinctly.  Although I still never have to worry about meeting a page requirement for a paper. J

As the years have gone by I learned what type of writer I am.  It’s like the tortoise and the hare for me, slow and steady wins the race.  I am always amazed when someone tells me they haven’t started to write their paper until a couple days before its due because I’m the one who starts writing the second I learn about it.  So what type of writer are you?  What’s your writing process like?
