The process of acquiring a dietetic internship is very competitive because you are competing against future dietitians from all over the nation. In light of this nature, only about 50% of applicants will receive a match their first time. If you find yourself on Match Day being a part of the other half, don’t lose hope, don’t lose focus - you have options that can keep you on track toward becoming a registered dietitian.
Option 1: Second-Round Applications
Second-round applications occur within a few days of Match Day. During this time, you can reapply to internships that still have openings for the season in which you originally applied. To find out which internships are still taking applicants after Match Day, go to D&D Digital where the list of internships that have openings will be posted.

After you select which internships interest you, the first thing you should do is contact the director(s) to find out if they are still accepting applications and what is needed in your applications. Like the first round, some programs may use DICAS and some will not.
To apply to programs that will use DICAS:
• DICAS’s Clearing House for Second Round Match will be open on Wednesday, April 6
• Fill out and set up application materials according to what your preferred programs requested. Like the first round of applications, there may be some supplemental application forms and requirements that are not completed on DICAS.
• The amount of time that each program will accept second-round applications varies from internship to internship. Know the deadlines! A program can close its site on DICAS after its application deadline has passed.

*NOTE: As long as you start a DICAS account, you will be able to set one up for second-round applications.
To apply to programs that will NOT use DICAS:
• Contact the director(s) of your desired program(s) to let them know you would like to submit an application. They will assist you in how to do so if they are taking more applications.

Option 2: Apply Later
Applying to Dietetic Internships for proceeding match seasons has its own advantages. It gives you a chance to gain a foothold in the professional world immediately after obtaining your Dietetics degree. This is a time to focus on what you may have been missing in your portfolio when you first applied. For instance, if you had very little clinical experience but would like to intern at a hospital, you can work or volunteer in that setting without having to work it around your class schedule at school. Another thing you can do is retake some classes you feel you can improve upon, especially the DPD ones that internship directors like to see.

Applying later can give you extra time to fully decide on what area of dietetics most interests you (if you have not already discovered it). With that clearer focus, you will be much better able to translate your visions through your work, actions, and writings that you will eventually submit again to your desired internship programs.
As always, keep in touch with professors and faculty at your DPD program, and check allaccessinternships.com for useful information, testimonials and advice!
