Lindsey's First Week of Classes

Monday was my first day of graduate school! The night before I had trouble falling asleep as so many thoughts were running through my mind: Did I register correctly? Are the classes going to be too hard? Will the teachers test our knowledge on the first day? Will there be parking on campus?? EVERYTHING was making me nervous.  Surprisingly, the first day went very well!  Monday morning, I woke up, had a hardy breakfast to give me brain power for the day.  I found parking on campus without a problem, and had my first class with an extremely kind and intelligent professor.  The rest of the day continued to flow smoothly.

During my classes, the teachers mostly went over the syllabus. A few teachers gave us quick introductory lectures about what the course would entail. I found myself sitting in class with a huge grin on my face.
It will indeed require hard work, but I am so excited to learn! To some people, school and learning are a hassle; it is stressful and difficult, and the day they graduate they never want to go back.
Of course school is challenging for me as well; however, being challenged intellectually motivates me even further to learn.  Having the opportunity to learn from professors, doctors, and RDs as educated and achieved as the ones at FSU excites me about my field! Learning makes me happy because I know that I have a unique opportunity to advance in my career and become better in my profession.

The classes and course descriptions (taken from my professors syllabi) I am taking this semester are:

  • Models of Health Behavior – A course that focuses on the relationship between health behavior and health status as well as psycho-social theories which provide a framework for understanding behavior maintenance.
  • Nutrition and Exercise – A course providing theoretical and applied background for why nutrition is important in active people and athletes and how nutrient intake can impact health, performance, and many physiological processes.
  • Biochemistry of Carbs, Fats, and Proteins – An advanced nutrition course understanding the interrelationships of nutrients in digestion, absorption, transport, metabolism and excretion; it focuses on carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins with an emphasis on mechanisms of action and regulation.
  • Seminar- Other students research and present a topic of their own. As a first semester student I simply sit in to listen and learn; however next semester I will be presenting myself!
  • Basic Exercise Physiology - This is a pre-requisite for my program that I did not have in my undergraduate. The title is self explanatory.
To be honest, 14 credits doesn’t make my schedule feel overwhelmingly full, like I was expecting graduate school to feel like. However, the homework that must go into these classes will greatly exceed the time spent in class. I am also getting a part time job to support my studies. My free time will fill up very quickly! Especially since this weekend will be dedicated to the first FSU home football game!
Back in Massachusetts, where I am from, football is a sport. In the south, it seems that football is a lifestyle. I will have to get all my reading and studying done before the weekend so I can participate in the festivities and take advantage of the fact that I am still a student and get access to school games!
