Last night I went to dinner with my roommate and two people from my department. We talked about many things ranging from how our weekends were, to our experiences thus far in the Tallahassee area, to, of course, nutrition, food and health. The majority of friends that I’ve made here have been from within my department and I find it helpful that we can all feed off each other (no pun intended). When we are in the classroom, we help each other out with studying, homework, and even just understanding the material. When we are outside of the classroom, we still help each other out with learning.
I feel that I am learning twice as fast here as I was in my undergraduate school. Part of it is because I am simply doing more work than I was in undergraduate. However, surrounding myself with peers that are just as passionate and enthused about nutrition as I am makes it very easy to spend all day learning about nutrition. Additionally, I know that it is beneficial to my career to establish relationships with people who will be in my field. Some day they may help you get a job, or you may help them!
Having not worked in the field yet or started internship rotations, I can’t say that this ‘community of nutrition enthusiasts’ is necessarily unique to graduate school. However, I will say that I am very happy that I continued with academia because this setting of students learning and helping one another is helping me gain more knowledge as allowing me to have fun!
Who knows, all these friends that I’m having fun with may some day be my co-workers!
