As finals week approaches, panic mode begins as everyone tries to cram as much information as possible into their minds before the final in that class where they have a borderline grade. Yes, finals can be quite overwhelming…I mean, it IS a week full of nothing but tests! However, it does not have to mean sleepless nights, endless caffeine, and enough stress to last you for the entire month of break.
Something that helps me keep the stress levels down is prioritizing and spacing out my studying. Some classes are certainly more difficult than others, so I’ll devote more time to reviewing the material for those exams. We’re a week out from finals right now, so this is a perfect time to start reviewing a little each day for those more difficult finals so I’m not up late stressing the night before my final when I need to be getting sleep. For those finals that are less difficult, I’ll probably review a little this week, but save the hard core reviewing until after the final that comes before it.
So, say you have a really hard final on Wednesday and an easier one on Thursday – I’d say start reviewing now for Wednesday’s final, but don’t stress about Thursday’s until after you’ve finished Wednesday’s final. Of course, you also want to start studying first for tests that are earlier in the week. By the time Friday rolls around, you shouldn’t have too much else in the way of studying for that last final that’s keeping you from heading home for break early!
Basically, my advice is as always – don’t procrastinate. Believe me, I KNOW how hard it is to keep it going at this point in the semester. You’ve already been tempted by an entire week at home for Thanksgiving and your month-long break is just within reach, but hang in there! By spacing out your studying and planning ahead a little, you can totally reduce the stress level, do great on your finals, and still have time to enjoy some time with your friends before everyone heads home!
