As it gets closer to the start of my internship the past few weeks haven’t been too glamorous. My director sent us a mailer of specific items that we needed to do before we officially start. It was basically a housekeeping list, for instance you need to get a physical and catch up on immunizations. The last time I had that many shots was when I was a baby! And you know just because you get older doesn’t make getting shots any easier, I still think I should have gotten a sucker or some kind of candy. All the results from my physical along with transcripts, and verification statement culminated in a nice collection of paperwork ready to submit to my director.
In between collecting pieces of paper I had to fit in some studying this summer. We were required to complete a medical terminology text. I kind of wish I knew a bit more medical terminology before now. I always used to think someone made up some of those big words just to confuse people on purpose. After reading this book apparently there is a method to those maddeningly convoluted words. We also had to memorize the Diabetic Exchange List, which was a lot easier to study than medical terminology.
In getting ready for the internship I also had to do some shopping. I needed to get a more professional wardrobe to wear. (And okay so maybe I really wanted to do some shopping too) I think that having this new wardrobe is more than just looking the part; it’s feeling the part as well. Regardless if I have on my lab coat on or not I want people to see me as a working professional.
As the start day inches closer I am getting more and more excited. It is still kind of surreal and part of me doesn’t believe it’s happening. It seems like I have been waiting for this forever or at least since high school, (practically forever) which was when I knew that I wanted to be an RD. For the interns out there now what have you been doing to prep for your internship? For the students getting ready to apply to internships what have you been doing to get ready for applications?
