Featured Intern: A Trip Down Memory Lane

As it draws closer to my start date for the internship I can’t help but reminisce about what it took to get me where I am today. More specifically I think back to what I was doing last summer to get ready for internship applications. Deciding where I wanted to go was never a big issue with me. Since I already knew the programs I was going to apply to I dived right into the application process.

Last summer for me was more about developing a game plan on how I was going to attack the application. It was deceivingly simple because at face value it just looked like a couple pages to fill out. But those papers required a lot of information to be collected and you had to figure out GPA calculations. Now a lot of internships are participating in DICAS (read Jenny’s article explaining DICAS) making this process much more streamlined. I think one of the biggest timesavers for me was familiarizing myself with the application and slowly starting to fill out some of the info. I knew that once school started I wouldn’t have the as much time or the patience to do the small stuff like filling in my DPD classes and grades.

At the same time you are filling out internship applications you also have to think about the ADA scholarship. That application is due a short month after the internship apps are due. So that also adds a bit more work to the mix, but I highly recommend you apply. Make sure you start working on your apps soon. You want to give yourself enough time to minimize the frantically rushing to put everything together. Even though I started in advance getting everything ready getting stressed about apps is inevitable.

Fast forwarding to the present I’m getting ready for the upcoming school year in a new way. I don’t have to worry about getting books for classes, school supplies, and making sure I know what my schedule is anymore. Now I am at the place I have been working so hard to get to and the feeling is amazing. I’m sure once the internship starts I am going to hit the ground running; until then I’ll relax and enjoy the last few weeks of summer.
