Whenever vacations come around, I head back to Northern Virginia to visit my parents. We are lucky enough to have an amazing international market nearby that completely embraces the diversity of nearby DC, and believe me, we make a day of it. Meanwhile back in my college town, I have a hard time finding soy sauce. In this post I just have to share some pictures of the offerings, and let you in on one of the great dessert secrets in the freezer section.
The thing I appreciate the most about the international market is the produce selection. They have dragon fruit, durian, 4 types of egg plants, and every specimen is beautifully stacked and blemish free, not to mention an absolute steal. Being the only Caucasian person in the grocery, I usually get some odd looks, but when I took out the camera to snap some photos I really marked myself as a tourist (or produce obsessed).
But what did I eat? That day, the market received a new product that they gave out to shoppers: Melon Ice Cream Bars. In American cuisine dessert translates to added sugar and chocolate. Asian desserts tend to be light and fruit based (although I’m sure there are some exceptions) like mango and rice, a far cry from a choco-lava cake with hot fudge.
The bar was honey dew melon based and really a lovely mint green color. Creamy and smooth, the combination of a bright fruit flavor and ice cream was just right for DC/ metro area humidity. A chocolate ice-cream bar just wouldn’t have had the same appeal!
Check your specialty groceries and let me know if you can find these refreshing desserts in your freezer section! I’d send you some…but I doubt they would make it into a shipping box (yum!).
