Featured Intern: Learning Curve

By: Amanda Sauceda

These past weeks in my nutrition therapy rotation have been challenging but now it’s all starting to really come together.  This rotation is the meat and potatoes of our profession so it’s only natural to be intimidated at first.  I would even get myself even more worked up at times because at the back of my mind was wondering how I was going to manage staff relief.  Staff relief is one week where interns are required to take over a unit and act as the RD for a week in that area.  In the beginning I kept thinking how I am ever going to be ready to do that!  But as the weeks went by I got a little bit more comfortable with everything and this past week was my turning point.  For one I received my mid evaluation and I received some great comments about my performance.  Listening to all the positive and encouraging comments the RDs I have been working with boosted my confidence.  I also noticed that this past week I wouldn’t mind if my mentor RD went to a different unit than me for a bit.  I found that I didn’t panic because I knew that I would be able to assess the patients without them right there.  Of course I still have questions when I encounter a situation I haven’t been in and that’s when I get up and go find my mentor.  The most important thing I have learned so far is that you really got to jump in and go for it.  You don’t learn as much as you would when simply observing what your RD is doing.  It sounds pretty straightforward when you watch and listen but it’s an entirely different feeling and perspective when you’re the one assessing the patient. So just go for it and don’t be afraid you are there to learn!
