Caffeine drinks- more commonly known as energy drinks, have become very popular over the years with young individuals, especially those in college. Energy drinks are most popular amongst college students, because the caffeine in the beverage helps students stay awake throughout the night, allowing them more time to study. Also, when students have to wake up extremely early for work or class, after a long night, an energy drink would aid them in staying awake during the day. Above all, the most popular reason why young individuals consume energy drinks is because they have discovered that mixing energy drinks with alcohol, causes an impaired state described as being "wide-awake drunk” (drugs.com). Consequently, consuming energy drinks along with alcohol is extremely dangerous. When an energy drink is consumed with alcohol, it gives a false feeling of being “sober”, leading to having more drinks and DRIVING under elevated blood alcohol levels. On top of that, many students have found themselves being hospitalized from alcohol poisoning, due to the fact that these drinks affect the ability for drinkers to judge their level of intoxication (FDA). As a result, the FDA is warning companies who distribute these alcohol-containing caffeinated drinks, and making them address certain issues pertaining to their product. Additionally, I advise college students to just stop drinking altogether, if you are of age and must drink, do so in moderation and responsibly.
At the moment, these are the companies who distribute alcohol-containing caffeinated drinks, which are under warning by the FDA:
· Phusion Projects LLC, which sells Four Loko
· United Brands Company Inc., which makes Joose and Max
· Charge Beverages Corp., which produces several varieties of a drink called Core
· New Century Brewing Co.LLC, which concocts a beer called Moonshot
