We always hear that eating out at restaurants can wreak havoc on your healthy eating streak. Obscene portion sizes, ridiculous sodium levels, and deep double fried everything. I agree…for the most part. Here’s the important thing though: If you’re smart, eating out doesn’t have to be any of those things.
One of my favorite things to do is walk downtown from my apartment to some of the local restaurants. The other day this is what my boyfriend and I ordered:
Maple Vinaigrette salad with walnuts, grilled sweet potato, blue cheese
Turkey Avocado Burger with kettle chips
Ginger Lime Gimlet and Oktoberfest Beer
The average restaurant salad can be over 700 calories, heavy on dressing, cheese, and croutons. And the burger? Easily more than two servings. But here’s how we like to think we’re restaurant healthy savvy. We split it and stopped when we were full! Shocker, I know, but it’s not always an obvious suggestion.
Don’t be shy to ask for half of your meal to be boxed, or to share with a friend (heck, even two in some cases). Know that you are entitled to ask for sauce on the side, vegetables instead of fries, or request grilled vs. fried. If you’re looking for the very healthiest menu item, chain restaurants of a certain size carry their nutritional information on their website. A little research can go far.
