Just the other day, my roommate (who is also majoring in Dietetics, Kinesiology, and Human Nutrition) and I were discussing the incredible wealth of career opportunities available to us upon graduation. She asked if I was still thinking about going into sports dietetics and I am, but there are so many other areas that interest me as well. She was having the same dilemma! Then again, maybe it isn’t a dilemma at all. Sometimes I feel like I need to nail down a specific specialization, but at the same time it’s the broad range of opportunities for dietitians that I love so much. Maybe completion of my dietetic internship will help me to narrow down my interests a bit or maybe it will just open my eyes to even more career possibilities. I love the idea of working with athletes to improve their performance through nutrition, but I’m also interested in public health, how the built environment affects physical activity and a healthy lifestyle, getting in the kitchen and cooking or experimenting with new foods, learning more about eating seasonally, cooking and eating whole foods….I could go on!!
I feel like the career possibilities are endless as an RD! And who says you have to stick to just one? Maybe I’ll open a cute little bakery on the side (which I’ve ALWAYS wanted to do!) and counsel athletes on the side. Or maybe I’ll do cooking demonstrations to show people how easy it can be to make delicious, healthy foods. No matter what, as long as I get to share my passion for food and nutrition, I know I’ll love it!
