Dear AAI: I know the human race is having an obesity epidemic, but is this also true of pets?
Dear Reader: Great question! While it is true of the human race; it is now also true of our pets! The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention has concluded that according to last year’s data, more than 45% of dogs and 58% of cats are clinically obese. To help keep your pet in shape, make sure to walk them often and do not give them too many treats for good behavior.
Dear AAI: I love eating my lunch from Quizno's and they have a new deal out called $5 combos under 500 calories. Are there any guilt free options with this deal?
Dear Reader: It is so exciting that Fast Food restaurants are jumping on the health food kick and offering healthy options! The new Quizno deal does indeed have some healthy options. Some options include the Cantina Chicken Sammie, Roadhouse Steak Sammie, Pan Asian salad, Chicken Noodle soup, and Tomato Basil soup.
Dear AAI: I take very small bites and chew until I get to twenty to make sure I get fuller faster. But, I just heard about a new study saying you should take big bites and chew less. Which one is better?
Dear Reader: The new study conducted by Lincoln’s Plant and Food Research scientists have been on a six-year mission to discover what foods make us feel satisfied the best and how to eat them. They concluded that taking bigger bites and chewing less was better for people watching their weight as the food was broken down more slowly in the stomach. This meant that people felt fuller longer and the slow release of energy could be burnt off over time. Which method is best really comes down to the food being eaten and the individuals body make-up.
Dear AAI: With Summer coming up and can’t wait to go to some baseball games, but do stadiums offer any healthy choices?
Dear Reader: While a lot of stadiums have not added many healthy choices, there are some parks that have better choices than the average burger and fries. Aramark, the food and facility managers behind some of our favorite stadiums, have added gourmet foods to the menus at parks. This includes shrimp, mahi mahi, beef filets, and salmon. An example of a healthy park is Fenway Park. They offer tofu burgers, veggie dogs, and fruit cups.
Dear AAI: I love jumping rope to burn calories, but hate when the rope keeps smacking me when I mess up. Is there any way to jump without the rope?
Dear Reader: You are in luck! A new jump rope was introduced called the JumpSnap. This is a rope less jump rope that tracks how long you’ve been jumping, how many calories you’ve burned, and allows you to up the intensity if you insert weights into the handles. The JumpSnap can be found on Amazon for around $60. A DVD set is also available if you like instructional videos.
