Weekend Plate: Portion Distortion

The past few weeks our student dietetics organization has had a table at local school wellness fairs. We were lucky enough to borrow these amazing paper food models from our nearby hospital. The models were full-scale portions of popular food options like hamburgers and ice-cream…except they were the size they actually should be, not what we eat in real life. The hamburgers were not Hummer sized burgers that leave you flattened on the floor in a food coma, which is always a nice change.

You would not believe the size the kids’ eyes widened to when I pointed out the actual portion sizes of French fries and bagels. I think I’ve seen dinner plates with smaller diameters. The fact that the display was surprising to the students was troublesome. We are conditioned to eat what is in front of us without thought, or listening to our body. We see, we inhale, we leave. You always hope you taught someone something new at these events, but in this case, I’m sure everyone learned something.
