Daily Plate: Mothers Day

Mothers Day, like Fathers Day, has never been a big production in my family, but every year we try to do something nice. This year, my mom came into the city for a yoga class and then we high-tailed it with Chris out to New Jersey for a pre-Mothers Day dinner.  get my workaholism from my mom, so it’s especially nice when our schedules coordinate! It was so lovely to spend some time with her.

Somehow, as always seems to happen when I visit my parents, I got sent home with a ton of leftovers and groceries, as well as a mountain of…soy crisps. I’m actually pretty psyched about that, as they’re not normally something I’d buy myself but do enjoy once in a while. They’re a nice way to round out a veggie-rich lunch and are also great dipped in cottage cheese, or so I thought when I was 20 years old and living in my first apartment…

Mothers Day also happened to be the 50th anniversary of the Pill’s approval by the FDA. Some said it was ironic that this should coincide with Mothers Day, but to be honest, I don’t think that’s the right word. I do, however, think it’s incredibly important and worth celebrating a development that gives women the ability to have a say in when they become mothers.

Like a lot of women in their mid-twenties, I’m aware that I have a biological clock, and sometimes if I slow down for a few minutes, I can hear it ticking ever so faintly. While knowing I may want kids one day motivates me to take care of myself, for now, I’m perfectly happy with my and Chris’  chlorophyll children and am hoping to adopt a pet at some point in the nearish future. Time will tell.
