AAI Q/A: What are CDR Certifications?

By Laura L. Smith

As a working R.D. you have lots of options. As mentioned in my previous post there are a lot of different career paths you can take after passing the exam. Dietitians can work in many locations, ranging from a hospital to a local grocery store. But, there are also some certifications that you can receive as well through the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR). To become a Board Certified Specialist in areas of your expertise you will need to be an R.D. for at least three years, have 4,000 hours of professional practice (1,500 hours for sports dieticians), and successfully completed the Board Certification as a Specialist in Dietetics examination. I have listed below, five CDR credentials for certification. They are:
There are also two certificate programs: the Certificate of Training in Adult Weight Management and the Certificate of Training in Childhood Adolescent Weight Management.
Certifications are a great way to specialize in areas that interest you the most. They allow you to receive a higher salary, improve knowledge of a specific area, continue education for R.D. credentials, build confidence in your skills, and expand opportunities for practice.
