Aqua Bounty is in the process of marketing genetically modified (GM) salmon.
Atlantic salmon eggs have been injected with a growth hormone derived from a combination of two other types of fish. The treated eggs will consist of all sterile females. Therefore, if any were to escape into the wild, they would not have a chance to reproduce.

Benefits of GM fish:
- Fish are modified to grow at a rapid rate, leading to an increase in production.
- An increase in production means that the cost of salmon may decrease.
- Lowering the price would encourage consumers to buy and consume more salmon.
- Salmon consumption promotes great health benefits through Omega 3 fatty acids.
Concerns/Risks:
- GM fish may pose a negative effect on the environment.
- Potential risk of toxicity and allergenicity towards human health.
- May open a door way to market and genetically modify a variety of other animal products.
In addition, according to Gregory Jaffe of the Center for Science in the Public Interest, if GM salmon is approved for sale, labeling may not be required. Although, the product will somehow be branded to show consumers what they are eating.
On Monday September 20th the Food and Drug Administration decided that more research was needed to allow GM salmon to be bred for human consumption.
