Featured Student: Internship Search

By Sydney Messick

Although I’m a senior this year, I won’t actually be applying for internships this year because I have another year of undergraduate work to finish up. However, I would be lying if I said I didn’t start looking for internships as soon as I applied to my didactic program. At first, I thought it would just be a matter of looking for one that provided some kind of focus on sports nutrition, since that’s what I’m interested in going into. Then I realized that there is so much more to consider!

As I thought about it, I got really excited about the prospect of living in a new state with new things to experience. It made me think about all of the qualities I would want – from climate, to whether or not the city was bike friendly, to cost of living. There are just so many things to think about besides just the curriculum that is offered!  This is definitely my own opinion, but reading some of the feedback on All Access Internships from students who had already been through or were currently in the various internships was a huge help!

My initial focus on only programs that offered a specific focus in sports nutrition left things kind of limited and not all of the options were in locations that I was super excited about. However, upon deciding to look at schools based on all of the other factors I mentioned above, I found so many exciting internship opportunities that I wouldn’t have come across otherwise. Sure, not all of them offered a masters in sports nutrition like I was originally searching for, but other really exciting things were offered instead. Seeing all of the different options and reading what other students had to say got me thinking outside the box for what I want to do after my internship. I may go in wanting to focus on sports, but I definitely don’t want to shut the door on other possibilities either!

What are some of the things you look at when searching for internships to apply for? Have you checked out the testimonials on the AAI website?
