Featured Intern: Trips Around Town

 By: Amanda Sauceda

So far I am about halfway through my community rotation.  As part of my rotation we are required to visit six different sites that offer some type of nutrition program within the community.  I have just finished up all my visits and have seen programs for little kids all the way up the ladder to programs for seniors and everywhere in between.

It’s one thing to have a speaker come and talk about a program but it is quite another thing to actually get out there and see the program in action.  Visiting these sites was one of the best experiences I’ve had so far.  For one of the visits I went to a food bank and to me this experience was all the more special because it was one in my own community.  I got there early to help separate all the food that was purchased then I assembled the bags to be handed out.  Later on I got to help hand them out to the people.  For another visit I went to a farmer’s market, which at first seems kind of odd.  The reason I chose this site was because of a letter that I had wrote to my governor in support of a bill.  Writing a letter to a politician in support of an active bill was another activity that all interns in my class have to do.  The bill I supported was to institute EBT acceptance at all farmer’s markets.  Luckily there are a few farmer’s markets that already do this in my neighborhood so I took a trip to see how it all worked.  I also went to a senior center and shadowed the RD who was there that day.  I got to see her give an in-service to the kitchen staff and then to the seniors as well.

So those are just a few examples of the different types of programs I got to see. My community rotation has been pretty interesting so far.  I’ve been part of different experiences that I never thought would be part of this rotation.  But I must admit I am looking forward to my nutrition therapy rotation that will be here before I know it!
