AAI Q/A: What is a Dietetic Technician, Registered?

I have heard the term dietician technician many times during my classes so far in college, but I am still a little bit puzzled about exactly the difference between a dietician technician and a registered dietician are. After going to the ADA (American Dietician Association) website, my questions were answered. I’ve compiled a little fact about what, and how, a dietician technician, registered is different than a regular registered dietician.

A dietician technician has:
  • At least a 2 year associate degree at a accredited university
  • Completed 450 hours of supervised practice accredited by CADE (or a bachelors degree
  • Completed required coursework for a Didactic Program or Coordinated Program in Dietetics
  • Passed a national DTR exam administered by CDR
  • Continued professional educational requirements

Places of employment:
  • Work with Registered Dieticians
  • Assisting in providing medial nutritional therapy in health care
  • Hospitals
  • HMO’s
  • Clinics
  • Community & Public health settings
  • Weight management clinics
  • WIC programs as nutrition counselors
  • Food companies or food distributing operations

Salaries & job outlook:
  • Most DTR’s earn (in first 5 years) between $38,800 and $37,700 per year
  • Job market is expected to grow faster than average through the year 2016
  • Right now employment is similar to Registered Dieticians
