Companies, whom are producing green tea flavored drinks, are in the hot seat with the FDA because of their unsubstantiated nutritional claims. Lipton Tea is one of the companies marketing their green tea flavored beverage with such deceiving claims. On their webpage under “Tea and Health”, data is presented implying that the bottled beverage is intended to prevent, cure, and treat disease. Therefore, Lipton is distributing a “new drug” to their consumers without proper approval by the FDA. The FDA has sent warning to Lipton Tea and other companies making the same claims, urging them to address the issue.
It is shocking to see a bottled beverage that is considered a carbonated snack food, carrying such nutritional claims. Of course, properly brewed green tea is beneficial to your health, but not if it has been packed with sugar and other additives, proven to be unhealthy. If you as a consumer want to feel more confident about what it is you are consuming and purchasing, an easy way to start is to read your food labels. The Food Guide Pyramid is an additional tool, which if used properly, may successfully guide you in making smarter food choices.
