Featured Intern: Taking Charge

 By: Amanda Sauceda

If there is one thing I have learned so far in this internship is that you have to be a good manager.  Not a great manager for others but of yourself.  This is something that I have learned very early on in my internship. And hint hint if you are applying to internships right now this would be a great point to make in your letters.

As a student I always felt like I could balance all the things I had to do pretty well.  Like any other student I had work, class, study, and the list goes on.  But now as an intern I’ve had to step it up to the next level.  Time has become an even more of a precious commodity.  On a different note I didn’t think my level of autonomy would change from being student to intern but it has.  There’s a greater degree of independence as an intern but you still have someone to report to.  It’s kind of like being a teenager again.  As a teen you aren’t an adult but you aren’t a kid anymore.  Being an intern you aren’t quite a student but you aren’t quite the professional yet.  You really try to find that medium where you speak up and make yourself known and at the same time be there with an open mind to learn.

Being a good manager has two components.  You really got to utilize your time management skills and accomplish.  I actually made my first to-do list this past week! I’m trying to find better ways to prioritize all the tasks I have to do now.  My old way just consisted of prioritizing in my head but I’m finding that to not work as well now.  The second part of being a good manger has to do with leadership skills.  Taking the initiative and speaking up but having that open mind is crucial for an intern.  In light of my quest to find a better way to keep track of assignments, how do you keep track of everything?  Any good suggestions for prioritizing assignments?
