Though I’m not vegan, New York is one of the easiest places to find delicious vegan food. The other night, I met my friend Alex for dinner at Caravan of Dreams, an adorable vegan restaurant in the East Village that also has live music. I had been there once before, back in January, for a blogger meet-up arranged by Meghan of Runners Kitchen.
The food was even better than I remembered! To go with my biodynamic, unfiltered rose wine, I ordered the Green Garden Platter, which featured a whole bunch of sauteed veggies (kale, broccoli, carrots, cabbage), seitan, garlic, and carrot polenta. Amazing! I really want to try to make a version of this at home now…Alex’s vegan paella looked great, as did his coconut water. While it’s best when sipped from a straw right out of the coconut, when made fresh, on-site, it’s pretty close. I was also curious to try the kombucha. Guess I’ll just have to go back soon…
Afterwards, we strolled on down to Lula’s Sweet Apothecary for some vegan ice cream. I was basically in heaven. The flavors were very creative and all sounded great. I tried the ginger molasses and chocolate flavors before settling on a scoop of drumstick (vanilla with chocolate chips, peanut, and wafer cone) with cake batter soft-serve on top. Alex’s brownie sundae with drumstick and cookies & cream was gorgeous and delicious. I legitimately think it was better than any cow’s milk ice cream I’ve had.
I love being in my twenties and living in New York. Being able to “eat like a New Yorker” has its perks too. I heard somewhere that New Yorkers walk an average of 4 miles a day just going about their normal business, and totally believe that. Great reason to fuel up on good food!
