Try again!!
Even though I have quite awhile to think about applying for a dietetic internship (I’m a sophomore on a five year plan), I know that the time will fly by. I’ve read numerous articles about how tough getting into an internship will be. So what if you don’t get matched?
Here are some tips on what to do for the next time around:
· Revaluate your credentials
· Identify your strengths/weaknesses
· Think of ways to improve both areas
· Look at additional dietetic programs that you might of overlook the first go around
· Reapply
· Obtain a job in the dietetics-related field
· Broaden your geographic location (stray away from home)
· Make friends with an R.D.
· Think about other career options
· Don’t give up!
If you don’t get matched, you might feel like your world is ending. But, don’t worry: you’re not alone! Just try again, get more experience, and make your next application shine.
Did this happen to you? What advice can you give?
Great tips! I'd like to add...
ReplyDeleteFirst take some time for yourself once the semester ends to relax. I found that I was always so busy and worried about classes that in order to really think about what I want to do with my career, I needed a break. Take this time to reevaluate your career goals. Why did you decide to go into dietetics in the first place? Ask yourself these important questions without the stress of classes. The summer was a great time for me to do this.
Absolutely keep volunteering and working jobs related to dietetics. Continue to stay up to date on current nutrition issues, and even though it might sound crazy, review your old school notes and books. You might get more out of it without the pressure of exams.
I haven't been matched three times in a row, and I know it can get frustrating. But, with each time, I learned several things I could've done differently. Here's a few things that I have done differently that I hope will work for me next matching round.
ReplyDeleteFirst, don't limit yourself to a certain geographic area or internship. Look into internships everywhere! Think of it as an oportunity to see different places and experiences.
Second, take a good look at your application materials and letters of recommendation. Could someone write you a stronger letter? Could some of the wording/content in your materials be "spruced up" a bit? Looking back on my original application letter, I realized I left out several strenghths.
Lastly...experience, experience, experience!! Use the time between matching rounds to get as much of it as you can! Remember, everything counts! It'll keep you busy and focused, and it will be a good daily reminder of why you've worked so hard and chose this field. Good luck! :)
I also think one of the most important things to look at is the ratio of how many interns are accepted to how many apply. Also possibly building a relationship (even just a quick email, or visiting during an open house) with a program and their director. After not being matched the first time, I looked more closely at programs that matched my strengths. For example, I applied the first round to places that were more community based, and even though I had volunteered at food banks and community food service programs, I had little experience with WIC or nutrition education, yet had been a diet tech for 3 years. This time I looked at more clinically-based programs where my work experience meant something, and did 2 writing internships over the summer. Just never give up! I matched this round in the fall... just keep trying!
