Tim Gunn’s famous line “Make it work” has been my mantra for the past couple weeks. As I end my first rotation this week I definitely have a much better picture of the life of an intern. You really got to be on your toes ready for anything. For example this past week I’ve had to give two presentations with less than 24 hours notice. I could have gotten super nervous and fumbled through the presentation the next day but I stuck with my mantra and it went great. (Take a look at last week’s post where I talk about public speaking.)
If there has been anything that I learned during my first rotation is that you got to roll with the punches. You have to rely on your past experiences to take into the wide variety of new ones that you’ll find yourself in. There are a couple techniques that I use to keep myself together: I make lists of everything that needs to be done, block out enough time for traveling/studying/planning, and I break down the tasks into smaller more manageable pieces. My final technique Sunday has become my planning day. Every Sunday I review what happened last week, look ahead to the events for the upcoming week, and file the crazy amount of papers that I seem to collect every day.
It’s too easy to become overwhelmed and stressed with everything going on. Besides the usual organizing stuff I do like to work out, yoga is especially helpful. How do you stay on top of everything without going crazy?
