Featured Intern: A Little Louder Please

By: Amanda Sauceda

Speeches, either you don’t mind giving them or at the first hint of the word you find yourself cringing.  Public speaking can be a very intimidating experience.  Standing up in front of people you don’t know all the attention on you and struggling to remember the words of your presentation only to have someone call out, “A little louder please.”

Presentations take a lot of time and preparation so you never want to hear someone say that they can’t hear you.  This past week I had to give an in-service to a relatively small group of fifteen people.  Originally I was scheduled to give the in-service this week but some meeting day changes required me to present a week earlier.  My PowerPoint and outline were all prepared but I wasn’t as ready as I would have liked in knowing all the words to the presentation.  In fact I had one night to get as familiar as I could with the presentation.  Practice makes perfect so I spent the night reviewing my work and practicing out loud.   The next day I gave my in-service and it went really well but there are always things to improve upon.

So whenever you have to give a presentation how do you prepare?  I think practicing your speech out loud a couple times really makes a difference and helps with clarity.  After doing that I ended up changing things around and expanding on some ideas.  And if someone asks for you to speak up a bit you won’t lose your train of thought because you’ll have run through the presentation so many times that you’ll be able to pick up right where you left off.
