AAI Q/A: Why intern at the Veterans Affairs?

This weeks edition of AAI Q&A will explore a little into the Veterans Affairs (VA) dietetic internship option. I heard about this program last semester through one of my nutrition professors and it sounded really interesting, so I checked it out. Here’s what I found:

·      VA healthcare system provides high quality healthcare and the most advanced
computerized medical chart system in USA
·      Only U.S. citizens can apply for the VA program
·      No application fee
·      All VA programs pay a “no strings attached” stipend. Rates vary through location
·      VA internships have a first time pass rate of 97-100%
·      Patient population is veterans but each site provides opportunities to work with non-
veterans through affiliate rotation sites in communities

Program Locations:

  1. Bay Pines, Florida
  2. Bronx, New York
  3. Cleveland, Ohio
  4. Chicago, Illinois
  5. Houston, Texas
  6. Los Angeles, California
  7. Minneapolis, Minnesota
  8. San Diego, California
  9. San Juan, Puerto Rico
  10. St. Louis, Missouri
  11. Tampa, Florida
If your at all interested in having a paid internship and working with veterans through dietetic practice, I encourage you to check out more about the VA program at the ADA site or at: http://www.dieteticinternship.va.gov/
