Featured Intern: First Week of Nutrition Therapy

 By Amanda Sauceda

I have to admit that I thing I was most nervous about when starting my clinical rotation was being able to find my way around the hospital.  I didn’t want to be the intern looking lost in the hallways.  Well it turned out that getting the layout of the hospital wasn’t as bad as I thought.  I had more stressing things to occupy my mind like maybe the fact that I started my first week in the ICU!  Normally interns don’t start out in the ICU because these are the highest risk patients and normally interns work their way up to this part of the hospital.  I started out there because of some scheduling conflicts with the other interns that are there.

For being my first week starting out in the ICU could’ve been really intimidating but like I mentioned before you just go to roll with the punches.  I really enjoyed working in this area even though I initially didn’t think I’d like it at all.  There were some frustrating times that mostly dealt with recalling all of the information that I learned in MNT.  Every night I went home to practice up on calculations for TPN and looking up all the abbreviations and words that I didn’t understand earlier that day.

This upcoming week I’ll be in telemetry, which has more of the lower risk patients.  Telemetry has clients that I’ll actually be able to talk to so I’ll get to use my counseling skills.  Overall it was a good first week!
