Nutrition News Roundup: Nutrition in Action: Around the Globe

About UNICEF. UNICEF is on the ground in over 150 countries and territories to help children survive and thrive, from early childhood through adolescence. The world’s largest provider of vaccines for developing countries, UNICEF supports child health and nutrition, good water and sanitation, quality basic education for all boys and girls, and the protection of children from violence, exploitation, and AIDS.  UNICEF is funded entirely by the voluntary contributions of individuals, businesses, foundations and governments. UNICEF releases useful and up to date news pertaining to nutrition and its affects around the globe.  Although this organization is primarily focused on children, adults are benefiting enormously through nutrition education. Moreover, when adults are educated on proper nutrition practices, they tend to pass the knowledge down to their children.  Over time this leads to disease prevention and healthier individuals.
Currently, countries such as Peru and Nepal are reaping the benefits of proper nutrition, through education and dietary supplementation.  In Peru, under the supervision of a nutritionist, children are being fed balanced meals along with multi micronutrients.  This is crucial, being that in Peru fifty percent of children under the age of three suffer anemia, but through this current plan of action a reduction of anemia is being achieved.  Meanwhile, in Nepal nutritional issues amongst the children include chronic malnutrition, anemia, and inadequate access to micronutrient-rich foods. With this is mind, Leela Rana a volunteer in her community provides counsel, basic health, and nutrition services to her community members. Furthermore, Ms. Rana is an active advocator of proper nutrition and care for children. She teaches care givers and mothers in her community about the importance of feeding Baal Vita (multiple micronutrient powder) along with high energy foods to children. Because adults and children are responding well to Ball Vita and education, Nepal is now trying to spread nutrition education throughout more communities.
