Daily Plate: Breakfast in Two Parts

I’m an early riser. Unfortunately, most people in my age group are not. Often, when my friends say, “let’s do lunch,” they mean one or two in the afternoon, and since I don’t like to be the buzz-killing old lady, I usually agree. That sounds like a totally reasonable time, but even on weekends, I’m up at seven. Me, turning into my mother? Not at all...

My younger sister’s spring break was a week earlier than mine, so we made plans to get together in New York on a day I only had a night class. When we were both in Boston, we used to hang out several times a week, and there’s been a big hole in my life since I moved to NYC a few years ago. I get so excited whenever she comes to visit! Sometimes a day of eating and shopping and walking around the city with your sister is the best medicine.

Her bus was scheduled to get in around one, but I was up with Chris at seven when his alarm went off. No way could an early breakfast get me through until my sis got here. What to do?  Breakfast in two parts!

Before I went to the gym, I had a cup of tea and half a grapefruit (not to self: take photo before cutting). This gave me a good burst of energy to power through a workout, complete with elliptical machine textbook-reading.

After I was good and sweaty, I made a big bowl of oats with pumpkin, banana, cinnamon, and almond butter. It held me over fantastically.

Of course, I still devoured my salad at lunch and was still hungry when we made a late-afternoon stop at the Lite Choice…
