Weekend Plate: What I'm Reading

One thing I miss having time to do during the semester is read for fun. Not a text book, or a lab manual, just a book I actually want to read. Over my spring break and the past few weeks between clinical case studies, this is what I’ve been reading:

The Healing of America by T.R. Reid

This book follows Reid as he travels throughout the top rated health care countries in search of a remedy for his wounded shoulder. Each chapter gives a run through of what the government covers cost wise, and average costs of say, an MRI, compared to what the bill would be in the U.S. Reid does an amazing, eye opening job, explaining the ins and outs of each type of health care system.

The Best Food Writing of 2007 edited by Holly Hughes

‘The Best Food Writing…’ is put out each year as a collection of the top food related articles published by authors/chefs such as David Ramsey, Pete Wells, and Ruth Reichl. The stories that chefs tell detailing what really goes on in the kitchen are my favorite! I’d say the best one I’ve read so far was a look into the nutrition facts of the 100+ single bite quality control ‘tastings’ a chef did in a day. The result was over 4,000 calories! If nothing else, you will love this series for its cover art.

The next time you are looking for a good foodie read, remember these and you won’t be disappointed!

  1. Oh I've been looking for Holly Hughes! The Boston Public Library doesn't have any of them, and I've been keeping my eyes out at the used book stores. I'm going to start looking again, thanks for these book suggestions!
