My business consultant, Charles Cimasi, MBA, President of Cynergy Consulting Services, Inc., New York, who helped me sell my first business in 2001, describes the following in our CPE manual, Private Practice, Getting that Jump Start:
Annually, you should project one year, five year and ten year goals, taking into consideration your expected life situation at each point. Typical life stages that professionals may go through are:
Life Stage 1 Unmarried
Life Stage 2 Married without children
Life Stage 3 Married or Divorced with young children
Life Stage 4 Married or Divorced with teenaged children
Life Stage 5 Married – empty nesters
Each of these life stages may impact specific and different priorities to your career planning.
Although some of these life stages may seem way beyond your imagination at this point in many of your lives, it is something to seriously think about. As a young college student/pre-intern, this was beyond my realm. However, as a seasoned professional I can vouch that your goals, wants and needs definitely change at pivotal times in your life. Be prepared to wake up one morning and experience an entire shift.
I remember waking up one morning and deciding it was time to sell my business and spend more time with my Kindergartner. A number of years later when my daughter was more self-sufficient, it was time to get back to growing and expanding my business as I prepared for her college years to come.
Keep all of this in the back of your mind. Set goals, but don’t become too attached to your goals!
