Featured Intern: Personal Life and the Dietetic Internship

Happy St. Patrick’s Day everyone! Thinking about the holidays and festive social occasions brings to mind how difficult/easy it is to have a social life while in the internship. Personally, I have had my ups and downs while in my internship. I have been fortunate enough to be part of a program with a great group of girls, and we can relate with each other during those adverse times. We have been out to dinner together and car pool together during those sometimes long rush hour trips. It helps to find small friendships in fellow interns when you are starting and ending a new “job” (aka rotation) every few weeks. My family has been supportive, but I have had to turn down a few family dinners to study for an exam or to work on a research proposal. However, I have found that you can fit everything in when you schedule your life and don’t procrastinate. After all, this internship is preparing for the real deal—a job as a dietitian.

When it comes to my boyfriend it’s a little different because we want to spend even more time with each other. We both have busy schedules. Sometimes we don’t go out on dates; rather we stay in and cook dinner together. That’s all fine, but when you want to have special time with your significant other you both really have to work to make time. Like I said, it’s all about learning what it’s like to have a real full-time job.

I do not mean to sound dreary and down about the internship. It is not a massive amount of work that kills your social life—only if you let it. It only gets easier as you learn to handle the nine to five routine. My point is that it is best to approach the internship with the mindset that you are there to learn, remember to remain light-hearted, and make extra time for your friends and loved ones.
