Daily Plate: Dress up Your Oatmeal

Oatmeal might be my favorite food.  Aside from tasting really good, it’s the perfect fuel. While I prefer the texture of rolled oats cooked on the stove, most mornings I turn to instant plain oatmeal in the interest of saving time and taking advantage of the added vitamins in the cheapskate brand I buy. The added iron goes a long way for a girl who’s not going to get it from steak. I usually cook it with water, but it’s also good made in milk—I prefer soy and almond, but cow’s milk can be good too.

There are so many ways to enjoy oatmeal. I tend to go through phases where I’ll have it the same way until I decide to try something new, which I subsequently get hooked on for another few months. These days, I’ve been cooking banana in with the oats and then stirring in a spoonful of almond butter.
Here are a few of my other favorite combinations of add-ins:

*bananas, blueberries, and strawberries

*cocoa powder, banana, and peanut or almond butter

*blueberries cooked in and then peanut butter and jelly added

*flax meal and chopped pear, topped with cinnamon and soymilk

*pumpkin and cinnamon

*protein powder

*blueberries and ricotta

*soaked chia seeds

*topped with dried for fresh ruit and nuts

*topped with cinnamon and ice cream (perfect for an end-of-a-long-hungry-day dessert)
