Spring also brings about a sudden urge to declutter and clear out closets, workspaces, and entire homes. It’s the type of activity, for me, which I dread doing, but once it’s done I feel SO much better. Lighter, even. It’s true when they say that the state of your room (be it a dorm room, office, or entire home) reflects the state of your mind.
Besides the thrill you get from walking into a neat, clean room, taking the time to get organized is well worth your while. According to an article in the March 2010 issue of Oprah Magazine, a 2008 study found that if people regularly tidied their homes and offices, most would gain between 16 minutes and one hour a day when they could be working (that’s four to 15 days a year). My goodness, that’s a lot of time!
Overwhelmed by the mess you live with? The article gives a great tip to clearing the clutter: Set aside just 10 minutes at the end of the day to clean your desk and get ready for the next day. Kinda like when you used to leave your outfit out the night before (I still do that sometimes!).
Peter Walsh, organizational guru that was featured in the article, says it best, 'It’s like exercise. At first it’s just a pain, but after a couple of weeks you can’t believe how great you feel.’
Good luck!
