Weekend Plate: Bento Boxes

Bento boxes make American paper lunch sacks look lame.

Bento boxes are Japanese segmented lunch containers that can range from ornate lacquered boxes to modern metal boxes. The basis of the Bento culture is division of food where each compartment holds a certain amount of food. Traditionally, the box will hold rice, a protein, and two vegetables. Children’s’ meals will contain rice molded into flowers or stars to make the meal more appealing.

In an article of Shape magazine's Februrary issue this year, Shape described the Bento Box as a great way to control calories. True, because only so much can fit in a Bento and you know exactly what is going in the lunch. But, like many things, it depends on the person (and what they fill it with). Such is the basis of the lunchbox diet (http://www.dietsinreview.com/diets/The_Lunch_Box_Diet/).

I love the this amazing Japanese cultural item for its beauty, reusability, and compartments. Want to love the Bento too?
