Dear AAI: Since summer is coming, I can already taste all those cheeseburgers I will be eating! But, how do I build the leanest cheeseburger without losing the taste?
Dear Reader: You’re in luck! In the latest Women’s Health, they build the 309-calorie cheeseburger that didn’t sacrifice any flavor! Here’s how they build it: a 113 calorie mixed grain bun, 4 calorie tomato slice, 48 calorie low-fat Swiss cheese, 140 calorie 95% lean beef patty, and 4 calorie dill slices. Saving a whopping 166 calories than a traditional burger; allowing you to save room for an extra treat.
Dear AAI: I read a research article about a gene that blocks fat storage in mice and may apply to humans, is this true?
Dear Reader: You are correct! In a study done at the University of Cincinnati, researchers have identified one of the genes that may cause our bodies to store fat. A study done on genetically modified mice were given a high-fat, high-sugar diet and had their kappa opioid receptor gene blocked, stayed slim. Unmodified mice, without the gene blocked, puffed up. This finding may lead to a drug that blocks the same gene in humans.
Dear AAI: If there had to be five healthy things I could do in five minutes, what would they be?
Dear Reader: Well, there is a lot of healthy decisions you can make every day, but if you had to pick five, and in five minutes, I would suggest: taking two items out of your handbag, all that extra weight can hurt your posture; putting fruit in a bowl on the counter, when healthy choices are out in the open you are more likely to reach for them; not forgetting to pee, extra bladder pressure can stress your urethra and make you more prone to urinary tract infections; clicking off the TV during dinner, eating with distractions cause you to eat 30% more than without distractions; and finally, smile, grinning is the quickest and easiest way to boost your mood.
Dear AAI: I take a sandwich everyday for lunch but have trouble finding the perfect bread. I love Ezekiel brand, but hate having to keep in the fridge. Are there any other healthy choices?
Dear Reader: Since health is on the raise in today’s society, hearty breads are popping up everywhere. But, not all breads are created equal, and sometimes you have to read the ingredient labels. Two breads that break the healthy barrier include: Pepperidge Farms’ 100% Natural and Whole Wheat bread, with 100 calories and 3 grams of fat per slice, and Nature’s Pride 100% Whole Wheat Hearty Bread, with 110 calories and 1 gram of fat per slice.
Dear AAI: My allegories are horrible right now, is there any food I could eat that might help reduce all the sneezing?
Dear Reader: A pain free allergy medicine has been found, and its in the grocery aisles; its yogurt! One study found that a bacterium in yogurt helps desensitize the immune system to pollen. Patients who ate yogurt had 90% fewer allergy symptoms than patients who did not. But, frozen yogurt does not count, since it is missing powerful cultures. Nonfat, unflavored yogurt may seem daunting flavor wise, but paired will honey and berries, you’ll feel like your having desert; not clearing up allergy symptoms.
