Featured Intern: Work and the Dietetic Internship

I recently began a job as a boot camp instructor teaching classes at 6 am and 6 pm Monday through Friday (and Saturday mornings as well!). I was hesitant to take this job because I understand the difficulty of juggling a job and an internship. First, the troubles began with intense workouts twice a day (in the Atlanta sunshine and heat). I haven’t worked out my body that hard in a while, so I had some broken down muscles, endured fatigue, and nausea for a few days. Second, I began to suffer from lack of sleep. I have to wake up at 5 am, be at the park at 5:45 am, get home at 7:15 pm, and I try for sleep by 9 pm. Third, there is simply not enough time in the day when I have to go to my internship from 8 am until 5 pm.

However, I am an exceptionally organized person and can somehow manage to bring my life with me in my car. I sit in Atlanta traffic all day, change clothes in my car in the back of the public health center parking lot, and manage to make lasagna with my boyfriend. I don’t really know how I do it.

Let’s face it though--it’s tough to do the internship because it is unpaid (unless you have some untouched trust fund, saved up money, or parents who will lend you some extra cash). Well, I didn’t calculate how much loan money I would need correctly because I know I am going to run out before I find a real job (unless I continue with this boot camp position). Note to future interns: you will need more money than you think for the internship because the RD exam cost money, and I didn’t take into account the time after my internship when I may not have a job secured yet. In addition, I forget that it even may take up to a whole month to get my first paycheck when I do start a new job.

At the end of the day, I am happy with how I lived my day. I enjoy everything I do even if there are torturous things that occur (i.e., traffic, schedule problems, fatigue, and rude people). My days are tough, yet fulfilling. I like to say, “I am still standing happily until I collapse”.
