It’s no secret that to be considered for a top Dietetic Internship position, good grades will only get you so far. Just like getting into college, you also need a bevy of extra-curricular activities to round out your resume.
I’m a graduate student who has returned to school after seven years of being in the workforce (I still work and go to school part-time). Going back to get my Master’s degree, getting my brain back in school mode, was enough of a change. Add to that the pressure of finding multiple volunteer opportunities and my head was spinning!
Lucky for me, I scored a great clinical volunteer position in a major NYC hospital. I must say, I’ve been pleasantly surprised at much fun I’ve been having, in addition to learning exactly what I’m being taught in class. I remember, back in the day, taking on crappy volunteer jobs just to beef up my resume. And while we volunteer to do exactly that (make us look good and get recommendations) I am really happy that this go around, I am getting something out of it.
Next, I have to find a “community” focused volunteer position, and I am excited to see what’s out there for me, who I can meet and what I can learn.
Do you volunteer? Where? Have you enjoyed it? Share your experiences!
