I guess it’s no secret that I’m a veggie lover—always have been always will be. As a small child, I begged my mom for rampion (long story). As an adult, I get cravings for certain weird vegetables. At a restaurant, I often choose an entrée based on the accompanying produce. French fries don’t really get me excited (unless they’re yam fries), but tell me something comes with roasted brussel sprouts or grilled tomatoes or sautéed Swiss chard or even just steamed broccoli and I’m sold. I almost always opt for the side salad over other, less colorful options.
At Quantum Leap in New York (there is one on Thompson Street and another on First Avenue), I know I can always get my veggie fix. Their lengthy, vegetarian (save for a few fish dishes) features a rainbow of produce prepared to actually taste like real food. Some restaurants try to mask the taste or skimp on the good stuff in order to cater to a more meat-centric crowd—not the case at Quantum Leap!
They offer great lunch specials—the Big Leap Bowl, which contains quinoa, steamed veggies, chili beans, and tofu is a must-try—in addition to soups, stir-fry and noodle dishes and great sandwiches. They also have a huge assortment of veggie burgers available, all of which come with salad and choice of steamed or grilled veggies or several types of fries. When I’m there, I almost always order the Vegan Grill burger, which comes on a thin whole wheat bun with grilled pepper, mushrooms, and onion on top. Amazing. They also offer beer, wine, and fresh-made juices.
