Donna Simpson does! How does a diet of 12,000 calories a day sound to you? This is the diet Simpson, 42 of Old Bridge, N.J. She currently weights 602 pounds and aspires to be a whopping 1,000 pounds. I kid you not. You can watch her Web appearances of ultimate binging – in a bikini – which happens to be how she pays the bills. To consume calories at this rate costs her about $750 per week on groceries but the health care costs that are sure to follow will be through the ceiling – if she gets through the door.
$993 is the baseline cost for someone like Simpson to go to the ER according to Daniel Emmer, public relations manager of Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield. “Obesity causes a minimum $1,429 increase, or 42 percent in medical costs” and he adds, “Research shows lifestyle choices and behaviors drive 87.5 percent of the cost for health care claims.” Anyone else find this disturbing?
Simpson is more than aware of the health complications that she is literally feeding herself – sudden death from QT syndrome, pulmonary embolisms caused by blood clots, heart attack, stroke, congestive heart failure, immobility, diabetes… the list goes on. “I love eating and people love watching me eat,” she says. “It makes people happy, and I’m not harming anyone.” As she purposely puts herself at risk, her hospital bills may have to be covered by the taxpayers of New Jersey.
Did I forget to mention she is also a mother?? The World’s Fattest Mother, to be exact, according to the Guinness World Record. Her 150-pound boyfriend could not be more proud.
This article brings to the table so many challenges that dietitians face. This woman is actively pursuing to surpass, almost double, her already morbidly unhealthy weight while purposely keeping her movements to a minimum to keep calorie burning low. She has a goal that does not coincide with any advice that health care professionals provide, so what is a dietitian to do?
I am straight up concerned for her survival and the wellbeing of her two kids. Simpson’s irresponsibility is not just a matter of food and her own eating habits – I am all about people being able to do what they want – but she is directly affecting the lives of those around her and those who will, as experts say, someday pay her price tag.
Thinking this is an April Fools joke?
