Nutrition News Roundup: Organic Foods - Are you really getting more 'bang for your buck'?

Some of us have recently gotten caught up with the fad of eating organic foods. But whether you’ve already started or are still contemplating the idea, wouldn’t you like to know where that extra buck (or more) will be going??

Studies show that organic foods may have increased levels of nutrients like antioxidants (which help your immune system and fight cancers!) Not only are conventionally grown foods lacking in nutrients but the chemicals they have may even HARM your immune system; double NO NO!

Foods grown with pesticides have been shown to reduce fertility. Since the chemicals have been shown to interfere with your hormone levels, it may also be linked to weight gain.

---OK we understand why chemicals could be harmful but why do organic foods have MORE nutrients than regular foods?---

Organic beef, for example is fed with grass which has 60% more omega-3s, 200% more vitamin E, and 2 to 3 times as much of a cancer-fighting fat called CLA that might even help you lose weight!

---The secret’s in the feed! ---
Organic milk, in addition to omega- 3s and vit. E, has more beta-carotene and is free of growth hormones which is linked to prostate and breast cancers. Organic eggs have substantially more vitamin E, A, and omega 3.

When selecting fruits and vegetables its best to choose organic versions of the foods that come in edible skins, since those are most subject to pesticides; for example: apples, strawberries, lettuce, grapes, peaches…

You should be fine with fruits like eggplants, watermelon, kiwis, onion, avocados.. (because of the thick skins!)
