Daily Plate: The Grind

We ran out of cinnamon a couple weeks ago. It feels like the last time I bought cinnamon was in, like, 2006, so it felt a little weird, to tell the truth. I kind of had a moment, thinking about how much had happened since then and how different my life might be by the next time I have to buy cinnamon.  I know, I know, measuring time in spices is ridiculous, but it’s interesting to think about.

When Chris went to the store a few days later, he came back with a jar of cinnamon sticks. “We can grind them in the coffee grinder.” Perhaps it would enhance the flavor. It was definitely worth trying.

It took me a few days to get around to it (cleaning the coffee grinder proved to be an oddly daunting task), but a week or so later, while procrastinating on a project, I finally sucked it up and ground up some cinnamon. All I did was place sticks in the grinder, a few at a time, and hold the button down until they’d been ground into a fine powder.

I have to admit, the flavor does seem a little fresher. The only problem is that now the coffee grinder smells like cinnamon!

  1. I tried to make French Macarons and used the coffee grinder to make almond flour. It worked but every time I grind beans, it has bits of almond!

  2. i don't know if i'd consider a cinnamon smelling coffee grinder a problem, but i definitely have two separate grinders-one for coffee and one for spices/flax/almonds!

  4. Cheers to that. I put cinnamon on almost everything. In coffee, it's an added bonus!
