Daily Plate: Green Smoothie

I’ve been eating some weird, weird stuff lately—especially weird smoothies. It might be the onset of spring that has me clocking so much quality time with my blender (warm weather = smoothie weather to me).  I’ve experimented with all different kinds of blender-happy recipes.

One afternoon a few weeks ago, as I was trying to decide between two snack options—cereal with yogurt or a big green smoothie—I took it a step further by combining them into what has become my newest obsession: Green Smoothie & Cereal.

Into the blender went half a banana, a few handfuls of kale, plain non-fat yogurt (silken tofu would work too), vanilla extract, and a little soy milk. Then, I poured it into a bowl and shook some Trader Joe’s O’s on top. Perfection.

The photo doesn’t do it justice, but this hit the spot. It was delicious. I figure that a smoothie, texturally speaking, is a cross between milk and yogurt, so why shouldn’t it pair well with cereal? Plus, it allowed me to work in some of my fruits and veggies. Very convenient.

While I’m sure I’m not the first person to have tried this (it has “health-freak stoner food”  written all over it), I’m glad I tried it out. It’s become the perfect breakfast, especially on busy days when I know my afternoon and evening vegetable intake is going to be a lower.

  1. Haha hilarious because I know we've all done something like this before. Even if it looks gross, all that matters is that you are getting those nutrients! hehe.
