There’s this deli near my school that’s like the U.N. of yogurt—you can find Swiss-style, Greek and even Icelandic varieties amongst your standard Light & Fit.
I recently tried Siggi’s one of the Icelandic varieties. I have to admit, it’s reeeeally good. It’s thick and creamy yet fat free. Because it’s made from strained skim milk, it’s packed with protein (16 grams per six-ounce container) but has slightly less calcium than other yogurts (only about 20% of the daily recommendation). I also have to give bonus points for the use of agave in place of corn syrup or aspartame in its sweetened varieties. I also can appreciate that the milk supposedly comes from grass-fed cows.
The main thing though is that it’s freaking delicious. Seriously, this sh*t goes above and beyond pretty much any other yogurt I’ve tried in recent memory. No wonder if costs an arm and a leg. For a once-in-a-while treat, though, I think I’ve got a new favorite. If you think about it, an ice cream cone costs about $3.50 most places (in New York) for a small, so forking over the same amount for a cup of Siggi’s isn’t really any worse. In fact it’s better, because it actually delivers some nutrients with the taste. That’s all the justification I need.
